DROP-IN POLICY: Per day drop-ins are allowed in some adult classes with the consent of the instructor or where noted in the description. Students may drop-in ONLY 3 times before they are required to purchase a half or full class (no other fractional classes allowed), unless otherwise noted.
Please Note: Jewelry course fees include a $10 lab fee, but do not include tools and materials, which vary by class.

Visiting Artist Lecture Series
Sculptor: Alan Osborne
Join us for a dessert reception, an exhibition talk and studio demonstration of work by metal sculptor, Alan Osborne. Mr. Osborne will speak about his large-scale expressionistic enameled copper pieces that will be on view in the South Gallery from July 29 thru August 29. Acquire or tune up basic jewelry-making skills. We will cover sawing, soldering, forming, surface treatments, finishing, basic stone setting and other essential processes. One-of-a-kind pieces will be emphasized. Aesthetics will be offered concurrently with technical information. Students responsible for materials and certain tools (supply list will be reviewed). $15 Materials fee due to instructor at first class. New students must attend the first class to receive instruction that will not be repeated.

Introduction to enameling
Instructor: Ed Lay
Enameling is the process of fusing glass to metal. It has a long and rich history, from the ancient Egyptians through Lalique and Faberge to the recent explosion of techniques from modern masters. We will cover the basics of enameling: preparing the metal, applying the enamel, various types of patterning, firing and finishing. In subsequent weeks, we will explore selected advanced topics based on class interest. $15 Materials fee is due to instructor at first class meeting.

recycled jewelry and metalsmithing
Instructor: Shabnam Bahmanian
80% of mined metal is used to making jewelry! Want to go green and learn new approaches to jewelry making? This class uses alternative materials along with reclaimed and recycled jewelry to create one of a kind pieces. Bring discarded jewelry from home or friends and combine with materials available in class. Basic techniques covered include hand sawing, methods of joinery-focused on cold connections, soldering, fabrication, and surface treatment. Advanced students continue ongoing projects and incorporate reclaimed materials as desired. Attendance on first day mandatory. A $25 materials fee is due to instructor at first meeting.

creative casting
Instructor: Wendy McDermott
Design stunning 3-D metal objects using the ancient lost wax process. Students will learn how to sculpt wax models for casting and will assist in pouring the molten metal. Finishing techniques will be discussed and applied. Students must purchase their own metal. $15 materials fee due to instructor at first class. jewelry, stone setting & lapidary

This class will emphasize traditional assembly techniques and design. Students will explore lapidary, (the process of transforming a rough stone into a finished gemstone, and will fabricate traditional
jewelry using small side-stones. Additional topics in metalsmithing to be covered will be decided on the first day of class. Prerequisite: basic fabricating skills (soldering, filing, shaping of metal and metal finishing.

evening jewelry - beginning & intermediate

Explore basic metalsmithing and jewelry processes. Students are introduced to using a hand saw to cut metal, methods of joinery, soldering, forming, fabrication, and various means of surface treatment. Students may work with copper, brass, or sterling silver as they create jewelry or other small forms. All students must be present on the first day of class. A materials fee of $45 payable to the instructor on first day of class covers the price of the metal and some tools we will be using.

listen to the metal metal forming and raising
Instructor: Peter Ostwald
Using classical working methods, inspired by the instructors yearly trips to Santa Clara de Cobre in Michoancan, Mexico, students will learn the art of raising copper. Students will learn how to design, raise and form a copper bowl. Students will learn to listen to the metal to determine its working characteristics. Returning students are welcome to work on bowls in process or can begin a more complex forms such as pitchers and vases. Texture, finishing and coloring will be addressed. A $25 metals fee will be collected the first day of class.

Take advantage of the Center's well-equipped jewelry facility to work on your own projects. Students may use the studio during the hours listed for a maximum of 2.5 hours per week Students may use the studio only when safety supervision is provided and must sign in upon arrival at the studio. Prerequisite: Must have taken one jewelry class at RAC in the last year and/or permission from RAC instructor.

metals supervised open studio

Students who have completed at least one jewelry class at the Richmond Art Center and are currently enrolled in classesSU1J – SU8J (day drop-in students excluded) are entitled to 2 1/2 hours of additional studio time each week during scheduled Supervised Open Studio hours. Students may use the studio only when safety supervision is provided and must sign in upon arrival at the studio.

metals studio workshops

pmc: combining silver & copper clay
Instructor: Hadar Jacobson
Students will learn how to use copper clay & how to combine it with silver. On the first day students make the copper portion of a pair of earrings. A kiln firing will be demonstrated. The earrings will be fired overnight. On the second day students fabricate the silver part, fire it with a torch and finish the earrings using traditional metal fabrication techniques. Experience with silver clay is required. The instructor will supply copper clay, copper wire and fine silver wire. Students will use low-shrinkage silver clay, which they can bring to class or purchase from the instructor. Please bring the necessary toolkit. A $40 materials fee, not including silver clay, is payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. Materials list available.

Interested in learning the basics of jewelry fabrication but dont have much time? This 2-day intensive is designed to introduce the beginning student to jewelry fabricating basics We will start with sawing, filing, sanding and polishing. Torch work - annealing and sweat soldering - will also be covered. Time permitting, bezel setting of simple cabochon stones and additional surface patterning techniques will be explored. Materials list available. $15 Materials fee due to instructor at start of workshop.
