Watercolor offers a wide range of possibilities for both beginning and experienced students. Basic drawing and a variety of watercolor techniques and color are explored. We will look at reproductions of past and contemporary work in watercolor and discuss different approaches. Individual instruction and critiques will be emphasized. Supply list available.

Whether you like to paint, draw or sculpt from a model you can do it all in this class. Hone your drawing skills, focus on anatomy or pursue a personal direction in clay. Students work in different media each week including charcoal, pastel, paint and clay, or may choose to work on an individual basis. A model will be available each session. Demonstration, instruction and critique available. Model fee included. 12 students minimum.

This is an introduction to the oil medium through safer, greener practices. Learn how to minimize exposure to toxic pigments and eliminate the use of solvents. Study the beauty of flowers. Demonstrations and lectures will include flower anatomy, color mixing, painting techniques and composition. Students will be encouraged to explore different approaches using water-based media and pastels. We will look at contemporary artists and the long, rich history of flower painting. Instructor will bring different flowers each week. All levels welcome. A $12 materials fee is payable to instructor on the first day of class.

Explore this ancient form of artful writing. Learn several styles of calligraphy, from pictograph to regular style. Write your own classic words, such as good luck, harmony and balance and then translate your own phrases and inspirations. Basic brush strokes and guidelines of assembling
characters will be covered. Materials are discussed and demonstrations of techniques given each week. Calligraphy practice is good for brush painters. Supplies reviewed at first meeting or bring what you have.

From illuminated manuscripts to contemporary abstract expressions, gouache has been one of the most widely used of painting mediums. Its ease of handling, textural range and brilliance allows for a wide range of expression. Explore techniques and uses of plant and earth pigments. Make your own paint medium using a palette knife, muller and slab. Pigments to be sampled include woad, chlorophyll, yellow ochre, lapis lazuli and more. Historical uses of these colorants and efficacy of working with eco-focused materials discussed. Patricia Bulitt
Make a wearable, full-sized dress from simple brown paper to commemorate a woman or person in your life. Add unique and personal embellishments using drawing, paint and collage materials. Bring photographs, cards or special memorabilia to include. We will begin with a simple tea party to share stories about that special person who will be the focus of the dress creation.

Through storytelling, art making and sharing tea, Patricia Bulitt creates opportunities for the community to focus on environmental issues and to celebrate special people in life. Bulitt will discuss her 14-year Codornices Park tea party event and facilitate a storytelling circle about inspirational women. Patricia Bulitt is an interdisciplinary artist/dancer who performs improvisational dance and site specific performances nationally and internationally.
