hands on fun art (for ages 6 -13)  

Instructors: Lisa di Prima

Children will experience the joy of creating by trying their hand at a wide variety of art experiences such as acrylic painting, collage, clay sculpture, puppet-making and printmaking. Using modern and traditional art materials, students will create both 2- and 3-D artwork. The emphasis is on originality, having fun while learning fine art skills and building self-esteem through accomplishment. There will a group exhibition of art work and potluck celebration on the last day of each session.

fine art cartooning  

Instructor: Lisa di Prima (for ages 8 – 16)
Have fun creating your own original characters and caricatures, inventing imaginary heroes, heroines, villains and creatures. Design "surprise panels" and "zoom" drawings while learning a wide range of exciting cartooning techniques using drawing, painting and sculptural media.

Kiki’s world: jewelry & miniatures    

Instructor: Kiki Rostad (for ages 6 – 12)
Children who like to work small and make wearable art will love this class! Using different materials, including: Sculpey, Friendly Plastic, Shrinky Dinks, beading, and found objects, students will make fun stuff to wear. In addition, students will cut, glue and construct environments using cardboard and found materials of individual interest. The last day is a pot luck celebration when all projects go home.

teen mural painting    

Instructor: Lisa di Prima (for ages 10 – 16)
Create a big, beautiful, exciting, colorful mural at the Richmond Art Center. Using high quality acrylic paints, students will learn how to work cooperatively planning the mural, preparing the surface and then painting on a grand scale. Express your hopes and dreams for yourself and the Art Center community. Learn the history of murals throughout the world. Be inspired and inspire others.

pottery on the wheel   

Instructor: Kiki Rostad (for ages 11 – 15)
Students will be introduced to the potter’s wheel and hand-building projects. The complete cycle of working with clay will be experienced including drying, firing and glazing. Each week a different project will be presented including mugs, “brain” bowls, plates and 3-D picture frames. Students are required to participate in set up and must clean up their own space. The last day is a pot luck celebration when all projects go home. Wear work clothes. This class is not appropriate for children under the age of 11.

Discover the power and beauty of art that illuminates the heart and soul. We will create mandalas (Eastern meditation symbols) in various materials and do Mehndi (impermanent henna tattoos) on ourselves and each other. Come and explore your inner self.

Instructor: Natalie Lenz-Acuna (for ages 12 - 18)
  
Hang out with a bunch of cool teens and learn elements of drawing, how to see, how color works and what happens when you put it all together. This is a concentrated class in 3 parts. First, learn to draw from life including proportion and the elements of human anatomy. The second section will focus on learning about color and how light affects color. Finally, we will use our drawing and color skills to produce prints incorporating different media. Bring a picture of yourself to paint a self-portrait from. We will keep a visual journal/altered book of our summer experiences. Most materials and techniques will be furnished.

Young artists explore a variety of media: tempera paints, oil and chalk pastels, watercolors, colored pencils, marking pens and clay. Children are enthusiastically encouraged to give free reign to their imaginations while having fun mastering basic fine art skills.

Please note: For all children's classes, we encourage you to enroll early so that we may have an accurate student count one week prior to the start of classes. We can then create a waiting list for classes that have reached their capacity or give families more notice if a class must be cancelled due to low enrollment. Security rules require that parents come into the Art Center to drop off and pick up children.
