Richmond Art Center Classes for Kids

The Richmond Art Center has taught generations of students and their children. Classes in drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, printing and craft are offered with a 12:1 student:teacher ratio. Creativity and original thinking are emphasized in a supportive, nurturing environment. All materials are included. Quarterly classes and workshops, spring and summer camp programs, and a K-12 school tour program are offered through the year. Learn about our need-based scholarships.

spring break camp: plant a rainbow
Lisa di Prima (ages 6 – 12)
Celebrate spring and Earth Day! Using a variety of media including paint, clay, markers, pastels, colored pencils and collage, young artists explore and create flowers, birds, insects and trees to express the changes of the season. Embellished flower pots will be filled with inspirational plantings for home gardens. Must be in first grade or older.

spring break camp: clay and craftaganza! NEW!
Kiki Rostad (ages 6 – 12)
Explore an extravaganza of craft and clay during this week of discovery fun. Young artists engage in a variety of clay building methods to make a nature tile picture frame, a beehive and their own puppet head creation. Painting and screen-printing projects include T-shirts, pillowcases and puppet body construction. Parents and friends will meet the puppets on the last day. Must be in first grade or older.

teen screen
Monica Gyulai
A screen-printing class just for teens. Design cool creations using images from the Art Center’s collection along with your own designs to make unique, personalized clothing. Basic screen-printing techniques covered. Bring black-and-white drawing, photo or Xerox with you to first class. Inks included. Students provide clothes. T-shirts available for purchase.

glass torch studio – beads and more
Ralph McCaskey (ages 12 and up)
Learn the fundamentals of glass torch work to make marbles and beads. Topics include a brief history of beads and glass technology, safety procedures and tools and techniques. Returning students can pursue their own projects. Demos and lots of studio time for hands-on work! $75 materials fee due to instructor includes didymium glasses, glass and mandrels. Teens welcome!

stop motion animation NEW!
Grace Rosario (ages 11 +)
Watch your artwork come to life. Students will work on one short collaborative project and an experimental class project that will showcase their own unique styles. Each week, students will view animations, discuss ideas and work together using magazine/paper cutouts, clay, original artwork and photos. Completed work will be included in a screening on the last day. Each student will receive a DVD of the project. Kids and adults welcome.

lessons and beauty in nature NEW!
Kimberly Overton (ages 5 – 10)
Nature and art history is the focus for our creative inspiration. We will look at the movement and colors in Van Gogh’s flowers and starry nights, the symmetry and uniqueness in memorative snowflake crystal stamps and the perfect imperfection of nature’s nonstraight lines, as illustrated in Hundertwasser’s paintings. Check out the rich designs on paper created by filmy surfaces as we experiment with marbleizing techniques and the impact of salt on water as we explore watercolors. A variety of media will be explored.

Kimberley Overton (ages 9 - 14)
Create compositions of birds in their natural environment. Work with a variety of media, including chalk, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint, collage and recycled sculpture materials. Explore realism, impressionism, expressionism and pointillism, including masterworks. While working, we will be in constant conversation about the use of the art elements and the principles of design to create unique and successful compositions.

The elements of nature combine with clay in this springtime class. Make a clay miniature birdhouse, a bird and nest, a driftwood clay garden art mobile, a wind sock and nature tiles incorporating materials found on a nature walk. Paint projects with glaze and complete the ceramic process. Dress for mess!

Callen Zimmerman (ages 7 +)
Learn folk art fiber techniques & skills from across the globe! Explore cultural histories traversing continents using materials sourced from our own backyards! Cut and sew a leather pouch from sustainably harvested materials, practice nonwoven cloth making by felting soap, use foraged plants to make natural dyes for fabric and construct a rugged frame loom using knots and sticks and learn to weave on it! Create a “World Traveller” passport book of the places you’ve been and skills you’ve learned.
