Richmond Art Center Classes for Kids

The Richmond Art Center has taught generations of students and their children. Classes in drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, printing and craft are offered with a 12:1 student:teacher ratio. Creativity and original thinking are emphasized in a supportive, nurturing environment. All materials are included. Quarterly classes and workshops, spring and summer camp programs, and a K-12 school tour program are offered through the year. Learn about our need-based scholarships.

summer camp: summer art spectacular
Lisa di Prima and Kiki Rostad (ages 6 – 13)
Make art and new friends while learning about different cultural art forms, developing skills and creating projects that stimulate the imagination. Painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, clay, construction and crafts! Small classes, excellent teachers and an exciting, creative atmosphere will make art the highlight of your child’s summer. Exhibition last day.

summer camp: hands-on fun
Lisa di Prima and Lauren Ari (ages 6 – 13)
Children will experience the joy of creating by trying their hand at a wide variety of art experiences, such as acrylic painting, collage, clay sculpture, puppet making and printmaking. The emphasis is on originality, having fun while learning fine art skills and building self-esteem through accomplishment. Exhibition last day.

Come explore the world of color and glass! Learn the basics of glass fusing to make pendants, earrings, tiles, a sun catcher and small dishes. Work to a maximum size of 6” x 6”. Safety techniques, glass handling and cutting covered. Tools and glass provided.

Holly Carter (ages 12 +)
Create wearable artwork in this one-week jewelry + metals camp! Saw and file a pendant or key chain fob, acid etch a bracelet, roller print earrings or a decorative plaque and learn enameling, the art of fusing glass onto metal!

Monica Gyulai (ages 12 +)
Design cool creations using images from the Art Center’s collection along with your own designs to make unique, personalized clothing. Basic screen-printing techniques covered. Bring black-and-white drawing, photo or Xerox with you to first class. Inks included. Students provide clothes. T-shirts available for purchase.

Kiki Rostad (ages 11 – 17)
Love clay? Try the potter’s wheel and throw basic forms like bowls and mugs. Learn hand-building methods to make projects like a cup, box, book, brain bowl, 3D plate and an animal of your choice. Glazing techniques covered. Students encouraged to generate their own ideas and will receive help in construction.

Create a colorful mural at the Art Center! Using acrylics and spray paint, learn how to work cooperatively to plan and design a mural, prepare a surface and experiment with different techniques to paint large-scale. Learn about mural artwork in the Bay Area. Bring an apron or old T-shirt.

Explore a variety of media to create stories, illustrations, illuminated manuscripts and books. Using watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, marking pens and clay, children are encouraged to give free rein to their imaginations while having fun mastering basic 2D and 3D art skills.
